Research Interests:

Surveillance, epidemiology, diagnostics, and prevention of infectious diseases with particular regard to molecular epidemiology. Major topics of research activity:

  • SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 
  • Human retrovirus infections (HIV-1/2, HTLV-I/II) - Viral hepatitis (HAV, HEV, HBV, HCV, HDV)
  • Food-borne diseases
  • Enteric transmitted infections (Norovirus, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Astrovirus, etc.)
  • Respiratory pathogens infections
  • Seasonal human influenza viruses, and viruses of avian origin comprising those with a pandemic potential (H1N1pdm09, H5N1, H7N9, etc.)
  • RSV (respiratory syncytial virus)
  • Measles and Rubella
  • Arbovirus infections with particular reference to viruses with epidemic potential (Dengue, West Nile, Chikungunya, and Zika)
  • Effectiveness of vaccines
  • Communication on vaccines and vaccinations.

Biography:

Full Professor of Hygiene and Public Health - School of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Bari-Aldo Moro, Department of Interdisciplinary Medicine-Hygiene Section. Ph.D. in “Infectious Diseases Sciences”. Second-Level Master in “E-learning applied to Health sciences and ICT in Medicine”. Degree in Biological Sciences (with full mark and honor) at the University of Bari. Specialization in Clinical Pathology. Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health of UOC Igiene, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Consorziale, Policlinico Hospital of Bari. Interdepartmental program assignment “Epidemiology and molecular diagnostics aimed at surveillance of infectious diseases of public health significance”. Major areas of research include epidemiology, public health, surveillance, vaccines, vaccine effectiveness, and molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases. Responsible for many surveillances and activities in the Puglia Regional Epidemiologic Observatory. Collaboration with grants from MIUR and the Ministry of Health. Author and/or co-author of many research papers in international and national peer-reviewed journals. From 2012 to 2014 General Secretary of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (S.It.I.).
